History

Broughty Ferry Art Society was founded in 1979 to promote Art locally and to encourage newcomers to paint. An informal meeting took place in The Goodfellow and Steven Tearooms on 27th. November 1978 and following the very positive response from those present the inaugural meeting was held on 12th. February 1979. Prime movers were Abertay Rotary Club, Leslie P Stuart, Harold Adams, Mr Beamer, David Goodfellow, John Barr and James Boyd, and the idea was welcomed by local artists and business people.

Interaction within the local community has been very important to the Society. To celebrate 10 years of the Society, first president and local artist Joe McIntyre, was commissioned to paint an oil painting of Broughty Ferry to be hung in the local library. In 1992 an outdoor sculpture by David Annand was commissioned and erected in the grounds of Broughty Ferry Library and to celebrate the Millennium, Adrienne McStay, an artist who specializes in glass, was commissioned to design and create a sculpture on the East Pier, Broughty Ferry.
